The nutmeg tree is native to the Maluku Islands of Indonesia. It was then introduced in the Celebes, Java and Sumatra, in Malaysia in the island of Penang, Bengal, the West Indies and Brazil as well as in Mauritius and Réunion where Pierre Poivre transplanted it.
The nut is found in the heart of a fruit that resembles an apricot, the shell of the nut, yellow or red in color, is called the mace.
Tips for use: The nut is grated to be used. Nutmeg is used classically with potatoes for gratins, béchamel, cheese soufflé, omelettes, gingerbread, and apple pie.
